Hull
The vessel is a Classic working style schooner wit a clipper bow round bilge with full keel attached rudder and transom stern. The construction of this vessel is typical of a large American schooner. Her frames are what are called double sawn in that the oak timbers are sawn to shape and then doubled with the joints overlapping and then bolted. The frames are molded 7" x *" on 17" centers. These are set upon an oak keel timber and that setting on top of the lower section of the frames futtocks running length of the center bilge is a keelson timber which ties the whole back bone of the vessel together. In this vessel the framing and majority of the other structural timbers are of red oak. The vessel is planked with Western Fir with the lower most streaks being oak and fastened with 6" round galvanized spikes. The vessels deck is caulked and laid Eastern pine over red oak deck beams. The planks are secured with galvanized nails. There is one main trunk cabin aft and three hatch scuttles.
Aft deck
Beginning at the forward end of the vessel and directly aft of the bowsprit is a double capstan manually operated to port and slightly forward of the captain is a water tight manhole for access to the chain locker. Aft of the capstan is a raised sliding hatch companionway to the forecastle. This hatch is followed by a raised ventilation and emergency hatch for the "A" accommodations cabin. To port of these hatches is an Edson #1 deck mounted manual bilge pump. Next aft is the location of the foremast with its attendant pinrails followed next aft by a large deck box with top opening covers. It contains a single cylinder Lister diesel engine for the Jabsco bilge/fire pump and generates 32 volt DC. The bilge pump is manifolded to all compartments. The 32 bolt batteries are also located in this compartment. Next aft is the companionway down to the "A" accommodations compartment. OT starboard of this companionway is a 20 man Goodrich life raft and to port is the paint locker. Two dorade vets along with a 20 man Elliot life raft follow this area. Outboard and to port of the raft is an Edson manual #1 bilge pump. The companionway down to the "B" compartment is next aft with deck boxes on either side. To port there are two dorades and to starboard there is one. At the point the main deck steps up to the after deck at the forward end of which is the main mast with its attendant pin rails. To starboard of the mast is an Edson #1 manual bilge pump and outboard is a deck box for the LPG storage tank. OT port of the mast is a salt-water wash down pump. Aft of the main mast is a large trunk cabin fitted with two companionways a large mid-ship skylight an escape hatch over the engine room and a hatch over the galley. Between the two hatches a large deck box for life jacket storage. Last aft is the steering wheel box
Sails and Rigging
The vessel is topsail schooner rigged with the main and foremast being 14" x 15" diameter solid fir with 7/8" 5/8" and 7/16" plow steel all wrapped and slopped. The chain plates are bolted to the side of the hull through the internal frames. The masts are new (2005) and the booms were replaced a few years ago. Engine and Mechanical Equipment
The vessel is fitted with a Caterpillar 3208 naturally aspirated diesel engine which was installed in 1987. At the present time the engine has over 6000 hours as the vessel has had a lot of service in the last ten years. This engine is mounted to port of the main mast and the shaft exits to port of the keel with a three blade Luke feathering propeller. Also in the engine room is the 9 KW Kohler diesel generator for the 120-volt system. This is mounted outboard of the main engine to port. There is a 25 gph Village Marine Tec water maker in the engine room
Electrical System
The vessel is fitted with three electrical systems. It has 12 and 32 volt DC and 120 volt AC. Three 12-volt 8-D lead acid batteries located in the engine room provide the 12-volt DC. This is used for engine starting and the electronics. The 32-volt DC is supplied by an alternator attached to the Listen diesel on deck and by 8 - 4-volt batteries. This is used for all pumps and lighting systems. The 120-volt AC is provided by the onboard Kohler generator and from shore power.
